Chinese flame tree
Also known as Chinese golden rain tree, Koelreuteria bipinnata is a medium-sized, elegant, deciduous tree with a broad, spreading crown. Long panicles of yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by quirky reddish-bronze, bladder-like, lantern-shaped fruits. The leaves which can grow up to 60cm long emerge pink, turning bright green in summer and brilliant shades of yellow and orange in autumn. It will even thrive on dry chalky soils, and tolerates urban pollution.
