Mahonia Charity
An excellent cultivar of this hybrid mahonia, Mahonia x media Charity is a striking, large, evergreen shrub with an upright habit, a very good choice for the winter border. The deep green leaves are heavily divided into prickly, almost holly-like leaflets. In winter, abundant spires of yellow flowers, scented of lily-of-the-valley, appear, lasting into spring, and a valuable nectar source for pollinators at a difficult time of year. These are followed by clusters of non-poisonous blue-black berries, much loved by birds. Often called Oregon grape, Mahonia Charity is a really easy, low-maintenance shrub, needing no pruning.
